Can you get paid to care
for a family member?

Start with the person receiving care and the caregiver. Then let our team help you understand the requirements.

The person receiving care

  • Has eligible, active Michigan Medicaid coverage
  • Needs physical help with daily personal care
  • Lives in an eligible home setting in Michigan

The caregiver

  • Is an eligible relative, friend or other caregiver, age 18 or older
  • Can provide the care the person needs
  • Completes required enrollment and screening

Caregiver relationship restrictions apply. See the full requirements below.

Home Help relationship rules matter: spouses and parents caring for children under 18 cannot be paid through this program. See the requirements.

View full Home Help eligibility requirements

Home Help requires eligible Michigan Medicaid coverage and an assessed need for physical assistance with at least one activity of daily living. MDHHS assesses the person at home and determines the approved tasks and hours. Household help or verbal reminders alone do not establish eligibility.

Caregivers must be at least 18, complete CHAMPS enrollment and pass the required screening. Home Help does not pay a spouse to care for a spouse or a parent to care for a child under 18. A caregiver cannot also receive Home Help services.

Cottage helps you understand the process; MDHHS makes the Home Help eligibility and service-authorization decisions.

View full MICH eligibility requirements

MI Coordinated Health (MICH) is designed for eligible Michigan residents who have both Medicare and Medicaid. Enrollment depends on meeting the program’s eligibility rules, participating plan availability and the coverage requirements that apply to the individual.

Covered services and care coordination depend on the member’s needs, plan participation and any required service authorizations.

Cottage can help you understand whether the MICH pathway may fit your situation and what next steps to ask about; MICH eligibility, enrollment and service-authorization decisions are made by the applicable program and health plan.

A care option for eligible people with Medicare and Medicaid

If your loved one has both Medicare and Medicaid, MI Coordinated Health (MICH) may be a better fit for coordinated benefits and services. Cottage helps you understand whether this pathway matches your situation, what participation and service requirements apply, and how to move forward with more clarity.

Services, caregiver matching, plan participation and schedules depend on individual needs, program authorization and availability. Home Help and MICH follow different approval pathways.

Your questions, answered

Michigan in-home care:
essential FAQs

Which family members can become paid caregivers?

Eligible adult relatives, friends or neighbors may become Home Help caregivers. Caregivers must be at least 18. A spouse cannot be paid to care for a spouse through Home Help, and a parent cannot be paid to care for a child under 18. A parent caring for an adult child may be considered, subject to the program requirements.

Read MDHHS Home Help guidance
Does my loved one need Medicaid?

Home Help requires eligible Michigan Medicaid coverage. Medicare alone does not qualify someone for Home Help. If coverage is uncertain or you have not applied for Medicaid, our team can explain where to start. Private pay home care is a separate option.

What kind of daily care may qualify?

Home Help requires an assessed need for physical assistance with personal care, such as bathing, dressing, eating or toileting. Certain household tasks may also be approved. MDHHS determines the approved services and hours.

Read MDHHS Home Help guidance
How much can a family caregiver get paid?

Your payment depends on the applicable caregiver pay terms, approved services and authorized hours. The state’s reimbursement to an agency is not the same as an individual caregiver’s wage. Ask Cottage for the pay terms that apply to your situation before making a decision; this page does not promise a fixed monthly amount.

How long does the application process take?

MDHHS describes a Home Help application process of up to 45 days. Medicaid coverage, required paperwork, the assessment and caregiver enrollment must also be in place. Our team can help you understand the steps that apply to your situation.

What is Michigan Home Help?

Michigan Home Help is a Medicaid-funded program administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). It funds approved assistance at home for eligible people. Cottage supports families with the application and caregiver process; MDHHS decides Home Help eligibility and authorized services.

What if we need private pay home care?

You can arrange in-home care paid for directly by you or your family. Cottage will discuss the care needed, schedule, language preference and available caregivers, then explain the quote and terms. Private pay care does not require Home Help approval.
